Although not quite at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration. “If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.” The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House. The pardon took place at the Latin Cafe. Photo: Provided of the venue. The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently named “6-7” its top term for the year. A New Life This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release. “The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message. “It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, diverse, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way distinctively Miamian.” Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the pig's pardon.
