🔗 Share this article ‘Celebrating like a Champions League champion’ - Kendall’s unforgettable evening for England It took Lucia Kendall only six minutes to score in her second starting appearance for England. “She celebrated as if she had won the Champions League,” noted England boss Sarina Wiegman with a grin. To Lucia Kendall, the moment felt just as significant. This comment came as Wiegman spoke about the young midfielder’s ecstatic reaction to her maiden England goal – during the opening stages of a win over Ghana at St Mary's Stadium. “The ground staff might need to repair that turf!” she added, poking fun at Kendall’s immaculate knee slide. As the 21-year-old stood up, with a look of disbelief and engulfed by her team-mates, a beaming smile appeared on her face. A Dream Return to St Mary's Kendall was “part of the furniture” at Southampton – a club where she had been for ten seasons, graduating from their academy and making 103 games before joining Villa in July. Therefore, scoring at St Mary's upon her return and during just her third international match felt unreal. “A really special moment for me to be able to do it here, where I grew up. This place forged the player I am,” Kendall remarked. “It seemed destined to happen. It was so special. I got flooded with emotion really.” A Rapid Rise to Prominence It may have been Southampton who “developed” Kendall, but a crucial decision aged 15 proved decisive to her future. A proficient cricketer as well, with a father who was a cricketer for Hampshire, she faced a choice between the two pursuits as her football career took off. Football was the choice. “It was an interesting one. There was no time for me to do both anymore,” Kendall said in a previous media conference. “I loved playing cricket growing up. It was a really difficult decision. I went back and forth, but when the time came, I knew I enjoy football a bit more.” Growing up admiring Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s goal-getting midfield exploits, Kendall is embarking on her own path with comparable attacking instincts. Her ability to handle first-team football alongside a psychology degree signaled the drive and dedication required for the top level. Southampton kept their prized asset as long as possible, but upon her contract expiry, Villa signed her to the WSL. Her meteoric rise has seen her become a WSL regular and an England international in a very brief period. “She shows consistency and that's not easy when you just come into a new environment and into the WSL with Aston Villa,” noted Wiegman. “Things have gone so quickly so fast, but she just keeps up her levels and shows she is a good player - and that is impressive.” Kendall certainly enjoyed herself at St Mary's, hitting the crossbar later in the first half and almost teeing up Villa team-mate Missy Bo Kearns for a goal, before Alessia Russo added a second with an injury-time penalty. She was substituted after an hour to a roar from the home crowd and the enthusiastic voice of the stadium announcer boasting that she was “Southampton's very own”. Having scored 29 times for Southampton during her long tenure, she said, “My early exposure to senior football there from 16 was invaluable experience. “The constant faith they placed in me gave me the confidence to take the next step. “I knew that I had to go in [to England] and prove why I should be playing at this level. The speed of the game is quicker and it was like going up a division.” ‘Technically and Tactically, She Is a Very Strong Midfielder’ Prior to her 2025 transfer, Kendall featured in 103 games for Southampton. Her smooth transition to the international stage has led to praise for her innate midfield qualities and effortless demeanour. While mindful of shielding her young star, Wiegman is unworried due to Kendall’s humble and focused attitude. In her early interactions with the press, she stressed her willingness to play her part for the benefit of the team. Arsenal striker Alessia Russo said it felt like Kendall had “been here for years” as she slotted straight into the squad. “{This team's just gone on to win back-to
