🔗 Share this article Indeed, it's Full of Absurdity, Over-the-Top Hospitality and Psychobabble. Yet I Truly Cherish Meghan's Christmas Special. No matter the time of year, it's always hunting season for commentary on the Meghan Markle's Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. Commentators, both professional and armchair, have seldom found such common ground as when eagerly tearing the series' initial installments to pieces. The prevailing view was that a more egregious regal scandal had hardly ever taken place than the now-infamous snack re-labeling incident. Now, in the spirit of a holiday maverick, she is back for another round with a "Christmas Special" (also known as a yuletide episode). But this time, it's different. The familiar ingredients we've come to expect – vague self-help platitudes, overzealous entertaining – remain, but within the context of a yuletide episode, the purpose becomes clear. The puzzle has come perfectly; it's a flawless festive blizzard. Now, Meghan resembles the eccentric aunt at most festive family gatherings – providing unsolicited, unnecessary advice, and contributing the occasional strange exclamation. ("I love spinach!" … "A tradition has to have a beginning." … "A tree is part of my memory and love of the holiday season.") She's a bit of a character, but her aura is known and oddly reassuring. And she appears content; she's causing a bit of damage. She knows her every micro expression, word and glance will be picked apart and scrutinized, but nonetheless looks unburdened and remarkably at ease. It could be this is the first occasion in history where that old chestnut – "Don't listen, it's pure jealousy" – may well be true. Because, you know what?, everything in Meghan's Holiday Celebration is charming. Admittedly, it's all cringily ultra-extra, silliness and extravagant – but is that not just what Christmas is all about? And the talk she's talking might be ridiculous, but the life she leads seems authentically shop-bought. Whatever she attempts, she pulls off with flair. Her cooking looks scrumptious, the holiday arrangement she makes is stunning, her gifts are practically too exquisite to open. Not a single thing is mediocre or aesthetically displeasing – including the way she secures her apron is creative and fashionable. She doesn't toss a dish in the oven, it "takes a twirl", and she wraps wrapping paper like an paper-folding expert. She also seems to be thoroughly enjoying herself from start to finish. How could any cynical observer not be won over, filled with festive joy and left with a powerful yearning for crafted festive snaps or a crudites platter where greens is organized in the form of a wreath? Meghan used to pretend for a living, of course, but even so, after the intensity of scrutiny she has weathered since she became involved with Prince Harry, the love child of two legendary actresses would have difficulty behaving this authentically. Her refusal to modify or even moderate her routine, regardless of it being so relentlessly, internationally ridiculed, is strangely reassuring. In our volatile world, here is one thing we can rely on: Meghan will stay true to form, no matter what. We will forever know where we are with her. If you're not yet convinced by her brand, a reminder that will surely come as a comfort: you aren't required to. There isn't the draft these days, and were it to return, it would be improbable to include viewing With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. If, however, you decide to tune in and are gripped with longing about her flawless Christmas, all is not lost either. Whether you're a duchess or a everyday person, few children completely grasps the effort and hard work their mother expends in the holiday season. So you can take heart by imagining the young royals' faces when they reveal a beautifully scripted letter that says, 'I love you because you are brave,' from a homemade Advent calendar, instead of a sweet treat.
