Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
