"Our team contained an abundance of unbelievable players," recalls former City teammate Ben Knight. "When you've got that many world-class players, you just feel like you're never going to lose."

These five players have a crucial thing in common: the route to the City first team was eventually blocked. "Cole was the kind of player that needed a degree of liberty to be at his most effective... He's gone to Chelsea as the main man; he can roam freely and get on the ball and express himself. The move has proven successful."

The primary goal at Manchester City's academy is clear: to produce players for their own elite team. To enable this, a distinct stylistic and tactical structure is used, echoing the philosophy of Pep Guardiola's side to ensure a smooth transition. The learning process often involves emulation of the existing superstars. "I attempted to copy Bernardo Silva, McAtee tried to copy David Silva," Knight said. "The hardest thing is they're multi-million pound players and you're trying to take their position—which is incredibly difficult. It is next to impossible."

Palmer's own path almost concluded early at City, with certain at the club questioning whether the then small 16-year-old possessed the necessary qualities. "He experienced a significant growth spurt," Knight noted. "Subsequently the pandemic occurred and he went with the first team and it was a case of: 'Oh my God, how good is he now? He's absolutely ridiculous.'"

Graduating as a Manchester City graduate holds a certain cachet, and the standard of player developed is repeatedly impressive. Smart recruitment and superb coaching help to maintain City's position at the forefront and render them the admiration of rivals. The club's eagerness to spend in young talent, exemplified by Lavia, Delap and Gittens, grants a distinct edge.

Each of the aforementioned players had the invaluable chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola and learn directly what is needed to excel at the highest level.
