Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in the city was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. This year will represent the twenty-second occasion she has competed in the main draw.

Setting a New Record

The tournament indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to compete in an Open's singles competition, surpassing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at the venue in 2015.

In the final days of December, Williams wed Danish-born model and actor Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
