The network's Top New Show of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
