Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.” With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus. About the Overwhelming Viewer Reception One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both. “It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show. “It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by online forums.” “We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds. The Big Question: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus? Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of. “We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.” On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on. “I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.” Alternatively, why mess with the iconic TV endings? “My dream is Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes. Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
